New Delhi: Indian Railways has manufactured its first semi-high speed, "engine-less" (like metro) train to replace premium Shatabdi Express trains.

Named after the year they are rolled out, the train is called 'Train 18' and has been built under the "Make in India" programme at half the import cost. Built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, "Train 18" would run on tracks from June this year.

Initially, it would ply as an inter-city train. The train, instead of being pulled by an engine, comes fitted with traction motors under each coach so it will be self-propelled. Also, it has driver units at both ends. That means it can run in either direction.

This would drastically cut down on engine reversal time taken by traditional loco-trains.

As per DNA report, the train would have 16 chair-car coaches, of both executive and non-executive type. The executive coach would be able to accommodate 56 people while the maximum seating capacity of non-executive coaches would be 78.

The fully air-conditioned train would offer a slew of facilities to its passengers -- wifi connection, GPS-enabled passenger information system and zero discharge bio-vacuum toilets to name a few.
