The incident happened at 4 am today over the Talappu-Irattakkannan bridge during shunting. A coach of the train also derailed.
The loco pilot said that the rail was not clearly visible due to heavy rain. The engine was to leave Kannur station by 5 am. Following the incident, the Executive Express started its journey with the engine of the Inter-city Express which is scheduled to depart from Kannur by noon. Railway authorities said that since the accident occurred on the shunting line, it will not affect the rail traffic.
