The Center has approved the plans for a metro service in Varanasi .

This follows after a letter from U.P Government to Urban Development Ministry a month ago requesting the official notification to be issued for metro rail ventures in Varanasi and Kanpur in light of the fact that the state plans to initiate development in December.

The Center, in consultation with the Uttar Pradesh government, has now broadened the provisions of the Metro Railways (Construction of Works) Act, 1978, to the metropolitan territories of Varanasi and Kanpur, making them ready for development to begin according to the DPR prepared .

Some features of the project:

The UP government has allotted Rs 50 crore each for the project in Varanasi and Kanpur metros in the last budget .
RITES which has compiled the project report for the Varanasi metro
The aggregate expense of the venture, including central taxes and land , stands at Rs 12,350 crore.
Two metro corridors are planned in the city - BHEL to Banaras Hindu University (19.35 km) and Benia Bagh to Sarnath (almost 10 km).
Benia Bagh will be the interchange station on both corridors, most of which will be underground.
Of the 26 stations, 22 will be underground, given the congestion in Varanasi city.
